History in brief
1883 - Darlington Football Club formed in July. Representatives from amateur and part time teams meet in a local grammar school to form the club. Feethams was used as the club's home.
1885 - Quakers enter the FA Cup for the first time and are beat 8-0 by Grimsby Town.
1896 - Darlington win the Northern League title.
1900 - Darlington win the Northern League title for a second time.
1908 - Quakers turn professional and join the recently formed North Eastern League. The opening day in the North Eastern League saw the club beaten 5-1 by Sunderland.
1911 - Darlington reach the last sixteen of the FA Cup. They started in the first qualifying stage and played eleven games in eight different rounds before finally bowing out against Swindon Town. The club was defeated 3-0.
1913 - Darlington win the North Eastern League.
1914 to 1919 - The war had a big impact on Darlington and the club ran into money problems. A works side called Darlington forge Albion bailed them out. Their chairman, Mr J.B Haw paid off the debuts and finished building the east stand at Feethams.
1920 - The club finished as runners up in the North Eastern league and won the Durham Senior Cup.
1921 - The following season Darlington went one better and won the North Eastern league. The club also won election to the third division north of the football league.
1922 - Darlington finish as runners up in the third division.
1925 - Darlington finish first in the third division and were promoted to the second division.
1927 - Darlington's second season in the second division was not as good and the club was relegated back to the third division North. The club remained in the third division until the war.
1934 - The club won the third division North Cup. They beat Stockport 4-3 at Old Trafford.
1955 - Quakers make history in November. At St James' Park, Newcastle, Darlington played Carlisle United. It was the first FA Cup match to be played under floodlights. The game was a second round replay and Darlington won 3-1.
1958 - Quakers become members of the new national Fourth Division and started to encounter teams that they had never before played at Feethams like Coventry City, Watford and Crystal Palace. Darlington also enjoy a good cup run in '58 and knock Chelsea out of the FA Cup.
1960 - Floodlights were installed at Feethams. They were used on the 10th of November. The opposition was Millwall and Darlington won 5-2. However an electrical problem set the West stand on fire. The stand was gutted. It was later rebuilt in the exact same style. Meanwhile Darlington enjoy a good League Cup run which saw the club knock out Palace and West Ham before bowing out to Bolton Wanderers in front of a crowd of 21,023 at Feethams.
1966 - Darlington finished runners up to Doncaster and gained the club's first promotion in forty years.
1967 - Quakers are relegated back to the fourth division. The club also enjoys another good run in the League Cup reaching the last eight before loosing at Derby County.
1982 - The club was once again in financial problems and in 1982 the club needed to raise £100,000. £50,000 was needed in just six weeks and the Evening Despatch launched an appeal to raise the money. The money was raised and the club survived. Ironically the Despatch folded in 1985.
1985 - The club wins promotion to the third division.
1987 - Darlington finished in twenty-third place in division three and are relegated.
1989 - Quakers finish bottom of the fourth division and are relegated to the Conference.
1990 - Brian Little leads the club back into the league at the first attempt. Quakers win the conference.
1991 - Darlington win the fourth division title and are promoted again as champions.
1992 - The club is relegated from the third division back to the fourth after just one season.
1996 - Darlington rounded off a good year for North East clubs by making it too the third division (the league had been restructured due to the formation of the Premiership - fourth became third) play-off final and an appearance at Wembley. In fact the club could have been promoted automatically on the final day of the season. However they could only draw at Scunthorpe. Plymouth were the opponents that day but Quakers lost by one goal to nil.
1997 - The East stand at Feethams is knocked down and new one built in its place.
1999 - The building of the new stand pushes the club's finances over the edge and in 1999 local businessman George Reynolds buys the club and clears the debts. He immediately reveals his intentions to build a new ground on the edge of the town.
2000 - The reached the third division play-off final and a second appearance at Wembley. Peterborough were the opponents for this match but just like the trip to the twin towers in 1996 the result was the same. On a wet Friday night Darlington were beat 1-0.
2003 - Darlington say goodbye to Feethams and move to their new ground at Neasham Road in time for the start of the 2003/04 campaign. The final game at Feethams saw Darlington draw 2-2 with Leyton Orient. The first game at the new ground ends in a 2-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers. 11,600 people turn up to the game.
2004 - George Reynolds region as chairman officially ends with the Sterling Group taking control.
2005 - Darlington narrowly miss out on the play-offs with an 8th place finish in the third division.
2006 - Darlington miss out again on the play-offs with another 8th place finish. Chairman George Houghton also takes over the club.
2008 - Darlington finish in play-off places
