Darlington earned a point at Gigg Lane against promotion chasing Bury. Quakers turned in a battling performance and were rewarded with their first point in six games. Darlington had enough about them to stop Alan Knill's side scoring from open play at Gigg Lane and ensured that the hosts run of draws in the league continued for the time being.
Steve Staunton handed Gary Smith a recall to the Darlington side as his side changed back to a more recognisable 4-4-2 setup. Meanwhile forward Mor Diop was also back in the starting alongside Curtis Main whilst leading scoring Tadhg Purcell was moved out into a wide position. Coming out of the side were Ross Chisholm and Dan Burn. Bury welcomed back striker Andy Bishop to their side after a long injury lay-off whilst former Darlington loan player Tom Newey also played for the hosts.
Darlington worked hard throughout against a Bury side who were unconvincing and only a soft first half penalty denied Quakers a rare win. Mike Jones went close in the first period for the Shakers before Shane Redmond denied the return denied the returning Bishop. The on loan shot stopper did well to keep out his header. The forward also saw another effort cleared off the line by midfielder Gary Dempsey.
Quakers though took the lead just after the half hour mark. A clumsy challenge by Ryan Cresswell saw Smith sent to ground and it allowed Purcell to step up and score from the spot. It was Darlington's first penalty kick for over five months and they made the most of it.
In the end the game turned out to be a tale of two penalties as a few minutes before the break Bury drew level from the spot. The home side needed some luck however when Stephen Dawson was adjudged to have been fouled in the box by Josh Gray, despite being behind the defender when racing into the box. Ryan Lowe kept his head to convert the penalty and restore parity.
Bury, with a frustrated crowd on their back, struggled to create many chances after the break. Lowe missed the best one of the lot. On the hour mark he fired over the bar. Substitute Tom Elliott won the hosts a free-kick on the edge of the area but Newey fired wide of the mark. Diop forced a good stop from Wayne Brown as Quakers made their hosts sweat. Despite throwing numbers forward Darlington emerged with a point which continued their decent record at Gigg Lane.
