Darlington missed a last gasp penalty kick as the chance to claim their first point of the season slipped through their fingers. Bury keeper Wayne Brown was adjudged to have fouled substitute Curtis Main has he tried to collect a high cross from the right wing. It handed Darlington a late route back into the game but Dean Windass' penalty kick was easily saved by Brown.
Whilst Quakers can point to their last minute penalty miss they couldn't have too many complaints over the ninety minutes. Chances were limited and while Darlington did put Bury under pressure during the final ten minutes Quakers never really approached the same sort of performance they turned in on Monday night against Leeds United.
Manager Colin Todd named an unchanged side from the one that turned in a battling showing in front of the Sky Sports cameras earlier in the week. Meanwhile visitors Bury, who were also looking for their first win of the season prior to the kick-off, named former Darlington player Simon Johnson on the bench.
Both teams started with early intent as they forced corner kicks inside the opening two minutes. David Dowson then went down as he fell over Efetobore Sodje's challenge inside the box after the Sunderland loan man darted into the penalty area. A few minutes later Gary Smith blasted over the bar before Bury started to get on top.
Ryan Lowe dragged a low shot wide of the post before he tangled with Darlington keeper David Knight. The Quakers' shot stopper raced out of his area to close down the Bury player after he had broken clear of the defence. He went down under the challenge but the referee saw nothing wrong.
Bury stretched Darlington on seventeen minutes as Shakers skipper Paul Scott fired a rising shot over the bar with Quakers struggling to clear. Jordan Robertson was next to have a go as he bought a smart save from Knight. Bury continued to pose more questions during the first half as Darlington wasted a late free-kick at the end of half. Gary Smith had an excellent opportunity to send over a decent cross at the end of the opening period but it was too long and went harmlessly out of play.
Darlington started the second half brightly with a flowing move early into the half ending with Jamie Chandler shooting off target. Bury though were soon back into the action and on the hour mark they were in front. A David Worrall cross into the centre of the box was headed home by Robertson to give the visitors the lead.
Minutes after conceding the lead Darlington could have been further behind. Knight tried to shepherd a ball out by the corner flag. Bizarrely however the ball bounced off the flag and gave possession back to Bury. It allowed Lowe to have a shot which skipper Steve Foster had to turn behind off the line for a corner kick.
With fifteen minutes left Darlington bought on Windass in place of Jeff Smith and it coincided with Quakers' best spell of the game. On seventy-eight minutes a Gary Smith cross from the right found the former Hull City striker in space but his shot was blocked by Ben Futcher. Two minutes later teenager Main was thrown into the mix too as Darlington looked to salvage a point from the game.
The home side kept the pressure on during the final ten minutes with Brown dropping a cross which striker Lee Thorpe was not quick enough to react upon. Darlington however were given a late chance to get out of jail when Brown fouled Main inside the box. Windass stepped up but it was a poor penalty and Brown saved easily to ensure his side claimed the win.
