Darlington defender Neil Austin celebrated his first career goal in the 3-0 victory over Morecambe last night. The right-back scored the game's opening goal with an excellent break downfield following a Morecambe corner. It was a trick which was repeated twice by Quakers.

Austin's goal came as he cleared from a corner kick and found Pawel Abbott. His shot was parried and Austin was in the heart of the penalty area to tap home. Austin has played over 150 games, mostly for Barnsley, but his first senior goal came at a welcome time with Morecambe giving the visitors a good game.

"It has been a long time coming. I have scored a few in my own net but that's my first proper one. I've had a few long rangers which have hit the wood work. It was a great feeling when it hit the net and really got the adrenalin going. To be fair I'm leading scorer in training so I'm used to that feeling," Austin joked afterwards.

"A few of the lads I travel in with every morning knew but there were a few surprised faces when they found out after the game. I've played about 160 games so it isn't a great stat but hopefully I can get a few more now. Obviously it's the strikers' job to score goals but if everyone can chip in then it does help a lot."

Both Morecambe and Quakers played their parts in an excellent match that was a great advert for League Two football. Afterwards Sammy McIlroy felt he thought his side was somewhat unlucky but Austin felt Darlington deserved their win.

"I think over the game we were the better team. The conditions were atrocious but it was the same for both teams. I think we adapted better and played better football in the right areas," he said.
