Darlington caretaker boss Craig Liddle has ruled himself out of taking on the position permanently. Speaking after Saturday's match with Macclesfield Town the youth team manager said he would not be the man to replace Colin Todd in the Arena hot-seat.
"I haven't tried to hide from the fact that I don't want the job. Its not my time for it. I am far too young and inexperienced for this type of role. All I am doing is a job for the football club until someone says otherwise," said Liddle.
"Until someone comes in then myself and Neil Maddison will pick the team as best we can. We think we know where we are short. If the new manager wants our input then we will happily give it to him. Whoever comes in will need to do things pretty quick."
Liddle was in charge for the game against the Silkmen on Saturday. Despite enjoying the better of the second half Quakers were unable to turn their numerous chances into goals as they lost 1-0. Liddle admitted his disappointment with the first half showing and also revealed that veteran forward Lee Thorpe would need a hernia operation.
Teenager Curtis Main replaced Thorpe at half time and along with fellow youngster Danny Groves was one of the highlights for Darlington.
"We took a gamble with Lee Thorpe," said Liddle afterwards. "We looked at their side and decided we needed some height and presence in front. He was not fit and in fact needs a hernia operation which he will have on Tuesday. However his groin strain had healed so we gambled. It didn't quite work because we lost a bit of mobility. With two games in though I am learning."
"I am going to make mistakes. That has probably made the chairman's mind up that he needs some experience bought in. We had to try and change things though. I do feel for young Curtis Main because he is only a boy. He shouldn't really be asked to start the games he has done. We feel he can make more of an impact coming off the bench and he did that today."
"We had nothing to lose at the start of the second half. Thorpe could have perhaps given us another fifteen minutes but we felt with Curtis' mobility and pace would cause them problems. We felt the formation didn't work as well as against Rochdale so we went back to a 4-4-2. We created chances but we are down there because we don't have the cutting edge or the composure to stick it in the back of the net. At the moment the belief is not there that we can score goals."
"Myself and Neil Maddison were disappointed with the set-plays as well today. We thought the delivery was poor. We had two fantastic opportunities to work on a set-play but because we don't have the belief or the confidence at the moment people are afraid to try something just in case it doesn't come off. If you don't have a go then nothing will come off for you."
