Darlington manager Steve Staunton felt his side were never in trouble for the majority of the first half at Chesterfield. Quakers were somewhat unfortunate to find themselves 2-0 down at half time. Darlington rallied in the second period to briefly pull the scoreline back to 3-2 but eventually went down 5-2. The Quakers' boss felt that mistakes were ultimately the difference between the two sides.
"That is football and you get punished. If you make the mistakes we made then you are going to get punished because they are a decent side. I thought we were comfortable for the first thirty to thirty-five minutes. Up until the goal we looked comfortable and we played some nice football and created some openings for ourselves," said Staunton afterwards.
"We were never in trouble until the first goal. We gave away another cheap one before half time which was a blow. The reaction in the second half was good and the players worked their socks off again. However it comes back to the same old thing; individual errors and team errors."
"I thought in the second half we had enough chances to really get back into it. We didn't take our chances and they took theirs. On reflection they probably edged it and deserved to win. We got back to 3-2 and you think anything can happen but we made some simple mistakes. We need clean-sheets. That is the only way we will get out of it. As good as we were defensively last week I thought we were poor today. The effort was there, they gave us everything but those individual errors have cost us."
