QUAKERS CALL FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS

Posted on: Thu 24 Dec 2009

Darlington are once again calling on fans and volunteers to help the club clear the pitch this weekend for Monday's Coca-Cola League Two game against Lincoln City.

The Quakers are due to entertain Lincoln at the Northern Echo Arena next Monday (December 28), two days after their Boxing Day trip to Rotherham.

Staff and volunteers have been working all week to clear snow off the pitch and surrounding areas, and they'd cleared the whole of the playing surface yesterday, while covers should help to keep the frost at bay.

But more snowfall overnight means Darlington will need to clear the pitch again at the weekend, and are asking fans to come and help out from 9am on Sunday (December 27), with hot food throughout the day and free match tickets for forthcoming games up for grabs.

"We really need all the help we can get to clear the snow off again on Sunday," said the club's general manager Phil Preston, who's swapped his desk for a shovel all week.

"Everyone who has helped out so far have done a cracking job in giving Monday's game a fighting chance, but we've had a couple of inches overnight which means we need to clear it off again.

"The good thing is that we managed to get the covers down yesterday, which should protect the pitch from the frost, so the hardest work has already been done.

"We can really do without another postponed match so it's very important that we do everything we can to give it the best chance, and we desperately need fans to come and help us out again this Sunday to make that possible.

"Volunteers can be assured we'll look after them with hot food, drinks and soup throughout the day.

"If volunteers can bring snow shovels with them that would also be a big help!"

Darlington are advising fans that the West Stand at the Northern Echo Arena will be closed for Monday's game for safety reasons.

Tickets are available from the ticket office at the Northern Echo Arena or the Cornmill Centre today and from the ticket office on the day of the game, or call the ticket office on 0871 855 1883.
