Darlington starlet Corey Barnes has been nominated for a national football accolade.

The 18-year-old is one of three young players shortlisted for the League Two's Apprentice of the Year gong in the Football League awards.

Sunderland-born Barnes, who can play in midfield and at right-back, has featured eight times for the Quakers this season after making three appearances last year.

He made his debut in the 1-0 home win over Notts County just under a year ago then played at home to Macclesfield and in a 1-0 win at Barnet.

Barnes also played in Darlington's victories over Shrewsbury and Burton Albion at The Northern Echo Arena earlier this season and already boasts a Man of the Match award.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at Grosvenor House in Park Lane, London, on Sunday March 14. Also nominated are Chris Brown of League Two leaders Rochdale and Kyle Haynes of Cheltenham Town.
