Mark Cooper was delighted with his side's performance at Workington, providing him with his first Quakers victory.
Darlington started their pre-season with difficult home tests against Premier League neighbours Sunderland followed by League One sides Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United last week.
And while Darlo acquitted themselves well against tough opposition, Cooper was relieved to see the back of them.
Darlington always looked in complete control of this game against Workington, who finished fourth in the Blue Square North last season.
And even though their three first-half goals couldn't be complemented after the break, the display of their younger players gave further encouragement.
Cooper said: "I thought we were terrific. Different class at times.
"We showed the right quality and that's what we are looking for. We had the right organisation and that has not been there the last few games.
"We showed here that if we get the ball we can do damage in the right areas.
"We had seven or eight kids on the pitch in the second half and we still passed it around and created chances.
"We could not really have asked for much more."
