SCOUTING REPORT: BARROW

Posted on: Mon 30 Aug 2010

Glen Robertson takes a look at Darlington's opponents tonight...

Form
After a slow start, there are promising signs for Barrow. They lost their first two games 3-1 but have avoided defeat in their last three to leave them in 18th place. An impressive 2-0 defeat of Rushden & Diamonds was followed with a goalless draw at York. On Saturday they led at Wrexham until the 95th minute when substitute Mike Pearson put through his own net leaving them with just a point when they should have had three.

Last Season
A respectable finish of 15th in the Blue Square Premier League would have classed as a decent season by itself for Barrow, but by adding the F.A. Trophy for the second time in the club's history - and becoming the first side to win the trophy at both the old and new Wembley - and reaching the Third Round of the F.A Cup - where they lost to Sunderland - 2009/10 was a success story for the Bluebirds.

Recent Meetings
You have to go back to 1971/72 season for the last competitive clash between the clubs. The Quakers beat Barrow 4-0 at their ground in the old Division Four.

Managers
David Bayliss and Darren Sheridan
Barrow's set up presents a rare occurrence in modern football - joint managers. Bayliss and Sheridan took over in 2007, achieving promotion from the Blue Square North in their first season and have kept them in the Blue Square Premier League ever since.. Last year's F.A Trophy success against Stevenage ensured both will go down in Barrow folklore. Both are still registered to play, with Sheridan making a couple of appearances already this season in the middle of the park.

Players to Watch

Paul Jones
Without him in the first two games Barrow conceded six. With him in their next two, they kept clean sheets, and only a 90th minute own goal spoiled the record in the third. The captain is a rock at the back who coaches alongside the Bayliss and Sheridan. The 32-year-old Liverpudlian is in his second spell at Holker Street and has also represented Hyde, Leigh RMI and Oldham.

Robin Hulbert
Last season's player of the year was forced to sit out the first four games of the campaign after being sent off in the F.A. Trophy final, before returning with a solid display against Wrexham. The 30-year-old adds steel to the Bluebirds' midfield with his tenacious displays. Along with a year playing for the Quakers, Hulbert has played for Swindon Town, Bristol City, Telford United and Port Vale.

Jason Walker
The hero from Wembley remains the main goal threat. A 30-yard strike clinched victory during extra-time for the Bluebirds in the F.A. Trophy, the most important of his 35 goals for the club since his arrival in 2007. He's notched three already this season. The Barrow-born striker has spent time north of the border with spells at Dundee and Morton.

Team News
Marc Goodfellow and Paul Rutherford could be available for selection again after both missed the draw with Wrexham. The management may decide to switch a few players around due to the close proximity of the fixture with the Wrexham defeat. They'll have to pick their players up after that damaging psychological blow they suffered with the late equaliser.
