BLUE SQUARE BET PREMIER ROUND-UP

Paul McGeary reviews what's happening around the Blue Square Bet Premier League...

Carlisle United forward Andy Cook has extended his loan spell with Blue Square Bet Premier side Barrow for a further month.

Cook returned to Holker Street for a second loan spell at the start of the season and Carlisle boss Greg Abbott is happy for the 19-year-old striker to stay with the Bluebirds.

Cook, a Ferryhill resident, scored against the Quakers in pre-season and many had thought he was on the brink of first-team action at Carlisle.

Meanwhile Barrow are to allow left back Andrew Nicholas to go out on loan in order to gain much-needed match fitness.

Nicholas, 26, has not featured in the side since the return of Wembley hero, Paul Edwards, after defeats in the first two games of this campaign.

Joint boss, Dave Bayliss, said: "Nicho needs to get some games under his belt, so we are circulating his name to all League 2 and Conference clubs.

Grimsby Town boss Neil Woods will consider a move for former Liverpool trainee midfielder Michael Burns after watching him in action against a Leeds United reserve side on Tuesday night.

Burns was a FA Youth Cup winner with Liverpool before joining Bolton Wanderers in 2007 where he was a regular member of their reserve side. Trials with Gillingham and Carlisle followed in 2008 with Burns joining Carlisle in January 2009.

Danish striker Bakary Bojang has also attracted the interest of Woods with the 24-year-old receiving rave reviews for his performances in the Danish Premier League with Odense last season. Bojang grabbed a hat-trick for Brian Honour's Horden side in their Northern League victory over Morpeth just last week.

Woods is hoping to snap him up ahead of Tranmere and Hartlepool but is waiting on his international clearance.

In their most recent league outing, The Mariners maintained their assault on the top spot last weekend with a comfortable 2-0 win over much-fancied Luton in front of a crowd of 3,822 - the largest of the day in the fifth tier. Luton sit sixth, five points of the pace currently being set by AFC Wimbledon.

Newport County have loaned forward Giuseppe Sole to Blue Square Bet South outfit Dorchester Town on a three-month deal. The deal enables Sole to partake in the FA Cup for his new employers. County drew 1-1 on Sunday in their Welsh derby with Wrexham, but needed a last minute Daryl Knights strike to salvage the point.

Crawley Town manager Steve Evans has revealed that he will be dipping into the loan market in a bid to further strengthen his squad.

The Red Devils recently parted ways with Darragh Ryan, while striker Michael Malcolm was loaned to fellow Blue Square Bet Premier outfit Hayes and Yeading United.

Crawley are handily perched in second spot in the league table going into this weekend's games.

Gateshead manager Ian Bogie will continue to look for numbers, despite the 'Heed' getting a much-needed victory on Tuesday night at the International Stadium. Craig Nelthorpe got the last-minute winner in a 1-0 win over Southport.

"We're always looking to strengthen the squad," Bogie told the Evening Chronicle.

"Just because we didn't bring anyone in on a permanent basis before the transfer window closed, it doesn't mean we won't try to use the loan market when that opens in the next few days.

"We're looking at a couple of areas, defence and midfield, because we'll run with the five strikers we've got."
