Wrexham v Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury Town did Darlington's play-off bid a favour by seeing off Wrexham 2-1 at the Racecourse ground this afternoon. The visitors edged the hard fought contest and took the lead when Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence put the ball into his own net after just three minutes.
The Welsh side's woes were doubled around ten minutes later when Dean Bennett was sent off for a handball. Shrewsbury's Colin McMenamin converted from the spot. McMenamin was later sent off for a bad foul but prior to this Wrexham did haul themselves back into contention when Matt Derbyshire headed in a Darren Ferguson corner kick twelve minutes from time.
Despite being reduced to ten men as well Shrewsbury hung on for the three points. The result moves the Shrews a place behind Wrexham in twelve. Crucially for Darlington however they now have a four point gap between themselves and the Dragons. Whilst Wrexham still have a game in hand on Quakers they have failed to make the most of a large number they had in hand at one stage in the season.
Wrexham will make up their game in hand when they take on Chester City on Wednesday night at the Deva stadium. They then take on Stockport County and Bristol Rovers a couple of days later - a situation manager Denis Smith does not like one bit.
"I don't think that we should be playing Chester on Wednesday. To expect us to play on Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and then Monday at this stage of the season is too much. However, I don't make the rules and we will just have to abide by that," he said after today's game.
Other results over the weekend also went Darlington's way once again. Bristol Rovers failed to take advantage of lowly Rushden & Diamonds as the relegation threatened Nene Park side gained an unlikely 1-0 victory. Finally Lincoln City could only manage a point against Mansfield Town.
