Story by Kevin Luff - 22nd December 2006
Wrexham are facing major injury problems ahead of this weekend's clash with Darlington. Wrexham could be without up to seven players for the game. Skipper Neil Roberts, Juan Ugarte and Mark Jones are definitely out and could be joined by Chris Llewellyn, Shaun Pejic, Danny Williams and Kevin Smith.
Jones is sidelined for at least six weeks after the midfielder learned he needs surgery on a persistent knee injury. Jones had an inconclusive scan last week but a specialist has recommended surgery to repair the cartlidge. The twenty-two-year-old Wales international had a similar operation over the summer, but was fit to start in the first match of the season. But the latest setback is set to see Jones missing over ten games.
In slightly better news Wrexham manager Dennis Smith could have the services of Lee McEvilly - albeit from the bench. The Northern Ireland international was close to quitting the game during his lengthy lay-off with a foot injury. However the player has made four substitute appearances of late. Smith however is treading carefully
"He's nowhere near fully fit just yet. He was in the squad for last Saturday's match and I expect him to be involved at some point this Saturday (against Darlington), but he won't be starting," said Smith. "He is still a long way off full fitness. This is not the way I want to do it really. Ideally I'd like him to have a 'pre-season' and get fit by playing more games like these, but we can't do that in our situation."
