Notts County v Darlington
Story by Kevin Luff - 27th April 2007
Barring a remarkable set of results in the final two games of the League Two season Quakers will play their final away game of the current campaign. Darlington are five points off the play-off with just six points left on offer and only wins over Notts County and a final day victory over Stockport, themselves challenging, would give Darlington even the slightly of chances.
Assistant manager Martin Gray insists that the mood in the camp is still good and despite the scale of the task facing the club he is refusing to throw in the towel until Quakers are completely out of the reckoning.
"Until it's mathematically impossible you've got to be positive and you've got to make sure everyone in the building is positive as well. The players and all the staff are. The players have been fantastic on a day to day basis," said Gray. "They've been really at it and they've trained ever so well. Micky Cummins made a comment a couple of weeks ago, he said imagine if we'd been in the play-offs now, imagine what a buzz about the place there would be because the players really are good on a day to day basis."
Notts County find themselves a point and a place below Darlington in the table. The Magpies, like last season, started the campaign well but some indifferent results during December and to a lesser extent January and February saw the club dip out of the play-offs.
Steve Thompson's side returned to form at the end of March and only had their four straight win run ended by Walsall. A draw against league leaders Hartlepool United last Friday night is a further step forward in what has been an encouraging season for the Magpies. Thompson is set to guide County into one of their highest finishes in the last couple of years after spending all their time in League Two at the bottom end of the table.
"They have done well and should not be underestimated. They went to Hartlepool and got a point. They did very well there and Jason Lee up front is a handful. He did very well against them on the Friday night which we watched. They are not to be taken lightly," said Gray.
Darlington look set to be without Gregg Blundell this coming weekend. The forward is struggling with a dead calf. However Quakers are not short on offensive options with Tommy Wright returning from suspension. With another game under his belt in midweek for the reserves Gaetano Giallanza should also be involved in the game as well.
Finally Darlington fans will benefit from reduced tickets for tomorrow's final away trip of the season. Notts County have cut ticket prices in all areas of the ground to £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and £1 for under 16's. Tickets may be bought in advance from the Notts County ticket office, but please note that advance purchases will cease at noon on Saturday the 28th April 2007. These reduced admission prices however will apply at the turnstiles. It is therefore not necessary for tickets to be purchased in advance in order to achieve the price reductions. The Notts County Ticket Office can be contacted on 0115 9557 204 from 9am to 5pm during the week.
