DARLINGTON V WREXHAM
Darlington start their Coca-Cola League Two campaign with a home game against Wrexham. There is much expectation about the start of the coming season. Quakers have added several new faces to their side with the aim of building on previous years' almost, but not quite finishes.
Visitors Wrexham start the season with much hope. Following a final day victory over Boston United last season which ensured that league football would come to North Wales again the club have wasted little time in strengthening and building for the future. Manager Brian Carey has added experience to his side in the form of Richard Hope and Wrexham fans will be hopeful of goals from former Hartlepool United player Efion Williams.
Optimism certainly surrounds both clubs at the moment. Wrexham suffered horribly from injuries last season and it played a significant part in the club's struggle. With over 11,000 in attendance for a pre-season friendly with a young Liverpool side in the summer and regular high attendances as the North Wales side battled against relegation last term there is obvious potential surrounding the Dragons.
"It is time for the real thing and everyone can't wait to get started," said Carey in the Wrexham Leader. "We are working hard to get it right. We are hoping to give the supporters something to shout about and be proud of the team. If we play to our potential, there is no reason why the fans won't have bragging rights and be able to walk around with their heads held high. They deserve that for what they went through last season."
The Dragons wrapped up their pre-season with a 7-0 win away to Buckley Town, with winger Josh Johnson getting the headlines after contributing with four goals. However as well as the result, Carey will be equally delighted that Steve Evans and Matt Crowell came through the game with no ill-effects after returning from injury. With so many problems on this front last term Wrexham fans will be grateful that they start the new season with few worries.
Darlington have added Andy Oakes, Neil Austin, Alan White, Stephen Foster, Ian Miller, Pawel Abbott, Rob Purdie, Scott Wiseman, Kevin McBride, John Brackstone, Ian Harty and Chris Palmer during the summer as the Dave Penney revolution begins in earnest. Pre-season may have seen a lack of goals but the performances have been encouraging against strong opposition and the defence looks solid. Along with a boatload of changes to the squad there have been a few notable changes elsewhere to the club.
"This is the first time I've had a mass change around like this but within two or three weeks of being at Darlington I knew I would have to do it," said Penney. "As well as the squad, we've got to get the training centre right, get the scouting network set-up right - it's a culmination of everything which is aimed at getting things right on the football pitch."
With so many changes it could take a while to gel but a quick start to the season on Saturday will only send expectation levels higher still. The 2007/08 campaign certainly has all the makings of an interesting campaign which starts tomorrow at 3pm.
