BARNSLEY V DARLINGTON
The pressure is very much on hosts Barnsley as Darlington make their way to Yorkshire for tomorrow night's Carling Cup first round tie. Barnsley collapsed to a 4-1 home defeat to Coventry City in the Championship at the weekend and manager Simon Davey will be hoping his side can bounce back. The Tykes went a goal behind but despite getting back on level terms from the penalty spot 'caved in' after the visitors second goal.
"They caved in after the second goal. I intend to play my strongest team in the league cup game. The players were prepared but when they go over that white line they are on their own," said Davey. "They fell to pieces a little in the second half and that is unacceptable. I was pleased for about an hour but in the last 30 minutes we made to many errors of judgement. There is plenty of work to do with them."
The result is in stark contrast to Quakers' first day showing at home to Wrexham. Darlington took the lead and despite being reduced to ten men battled their way to a 2-0 victory in an entertaining encounter. Dave Penney's side looked defensively composed and Wrexham's man advantage was hardly seen at times.
"It is a good game for us," declared Penney. "We have three former players of theirs going back so we are looking forward to it. There is no pressure on us, we can go there, enjoy it and have a nice day out and try to get a result. Barnsley games, from my experience, are tough ones. They will want to bounce back and we need to make sure we don't get the back lash from it."
Quakers will be looking to keep their momentum going with another positive result. Penney is refusing to head to Oakwell and shut up shop. The Darlington boss is looking to capitalise on any lack of confidence surrounding the hosts at the present time and get a result. With Penney's League Cup experience and Darlington proving they can results in this competition with a victory over Stoke City and an excellent display at Reading last season a result for the League Two side should not stretch anyone's imagination.
"We are not going to go and sit back and take everything they throw at us because we want to be positive as well. With Pawel (Abbott), Tommy (Wright) and Julian (Joachim) we have goals in us," said the Darlington boss. "We won't be sitting back and accepting a draw we are going to go there and try to win it. We have to do it the right way and make sure we stay in the game and hopefully as it goes on we can impose ourselves on proceedings."
Darlington will be without Andy Oakes following his red card against Wrexham. David Stockdale will take his place in goal. Meanwhile Chris Palmer is free to play in the fixture however Ian Miller is unavailable for selection as part of his loan deal from Ipswich Town. Alan White is likely to take his place. Tim Ryan may well play a part in the game following a knock on his toe during the opening day win. Whilst the injury is far from serious Quakers' management team will asses the situation and do have options in the form of John Brackstone and Rob Purdie if they need to reshuffle.
