Stockdale signed for Darlington in late July 2006 after impressing in several pre-season matches to add competition to first choice keeper Sam Russell. Stockdale developed through the York City youth system and made his Football League debut when coming on as a substitute on the last day of the 2002/03 season for the Minsterman. Stockdale also had a loan spell at Wakefield & Emley in. September 2005.
