Noel Whelan signed for Darlington in October 2009. The experienced forward started his career at Leeds United and made his breakthrough at the Yorkshire club in 1993. A £2 million move to Coventry City followed in 1995 and Noel went on to score eight times for the Sky Blues before the end of the 1995/96 campaign. He scored 39 goals in 155 games in five years for the club before he joined Boro for £2.2m in 2000. Spells at Crystal Palace, Millwall, Derby County, Aberdeen, Boston United, Livingston and Dumfermline all followed. There was also a brief spell at non-league Harrogate Town in December 2008 before he joined Darlington nearly a year later.
